In addition to being a center for arts, entertainment, and events, The Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College provides a professional setting where students can grow in their skills and education.
Music and theater students take classes and rehearse in the Fine Arts classrooms near the Hanson Theatre. Throughout the semester, they building their performance resume through recitals, concerts, and theatrical productions held in the Hanson Theatre and on the Mendel Center Mainstage. Among the various performance ensembles are Voices LMC, LMC Concert Choir, and the LMC Jazz Band. Students also participate in the fall and spring theater productions, as well as the popular Madrigal Feast.
Hospitality students learn the intricacies of preparing for and hosting a large-scale dinner theater event each year. The annual event which draws hundreds of attendees is held in the Grand Upton Hall and makes use of the Mendel Center kitchen.
The Great Lakes Wine Institute is currently housed in the Mendel Center. It is the Midwest’s first and only commercial teaching winery. Here, students learn all aspects of the wine industry, including agriculture, winemaking, and the business of sales, marketing, distribution, and logistics. Students who complete the two-year program will earn an Associate Degree in Enology and Viticulture.
